APPLICATION OF PAYMENTS

Portnoff under MCTLA requires districts and municipalities to sign an ordinance granting Portnoff the ability to tack on fees and collection costs to the tax bill.  Also by signing this they are agreeing that such fees are reasonable.  But the part that really shocked me was they allow payments to be paid in the following order (1) collection fees (2) expenses (3) tax.

So when I sent $880.00 to pay my 2018 taxes, $162.96 was applied to them.  $717.04 went to $500 attorney fees, $157.45 collection costs and 59.59 in interest.
